Classes offered at Hrim-Schola XI, 10 March 2007
© 2007, Carolyn Priest-Dorman and the instructors
This year Hrim-Schola once again welcomes teachers from three kingdoms! This year we
have a bumper crop of classes, more than we've ever had before. We offer complete tracks in
tablet weaving, knitting, needle arts, and bardic arts plus a large number of other classes in
dyeing, weaving, braiding, research, and other fun stuff. There is at least one "sharp things" class
this year, too.
What follows are the confirmed classes. Unless somebody cancels, no others will be added
as we get closer to the date of the event. That's because we've completely maxed out the
available classroom space!
Tablet Weaving
- Introduction to Tablet Weaving by Mistress Mirabel Belchere
- description forthcoming. Two hours. 1:30pm.
- Applied Laziness as a Guiding Principle: 3/1 Broken Twill, Master Herveus
d'Ormonde
- 3/1 broken twill provides interesting design possibilities. This class focuses on drafting
patterns, taking into account the idea of minimizing disruptions to the basic turning pattern of the
cards -- applied laziness. The class will begin with lecture on the principles, followed by
hands-on pattern drafting. Two hours. 11:00am.
- Double-Faced Tablet Weaving, Lord Gauen Wydefare
- A period intermediate technique for producing two-color patterns and motifs. Materials are
available for seven; auditors or anyone with their own string are also welcome. No charge. One
hour. 12:15pm.
Narrow Wares
- Basic Fingerlooping, Lady Rosina von Schaffhausen
- Need some authentic lacing for that fabulous new garb? A string to tie up your new purse?
Or are you making a new hairnet and need edging for it? Try a fingerloop braid! Fingerloop
braids were used in period for all of these purposes. In this class we will make a basic fingerloop
braid that appears in more than one of the extant instruction books. One hour. 11:00am.
- Kumihimo Braiding on a Card, Lady Erlandr skald di Njorlandi
- For those who want to start but aren't sure if they can put together the larger kit with wood
and spools, this is a portable and fun way to begin learning this period art form. Students will
learn the basic patterns of Japanese braiding using colored floss. Students should bring floss if
they have some, in at least 3 colors. Kit cost is $3. One hour. 1:30pm.
- More Multiperson Braids for the Lone Braider, Mistress Phiala O'Ceallaigh
- Many of the period recipes for fingerloop braids require an assistant, but that can be hard to
find. Here's the next installment in my do-it-yourself multiperson braid recipe redactions.
Limited to 8. One hour. 2:45pm.
Knitting, Nålebinding, and the Like
- Nålebinding Tutorial, Lady Ása in Svarta
- Revolving tutorial on how to get started with nålebinding. Yarn and needle
provided. Drop by any time, all afternoon. The Library.

students but auditors are welcome. One hour. 2:45pm.
- Petting the Porcupine, Lady Henna Sinclair
- Knitting on double pointed needles can look terrifying to the uninitiated, but is really not
difficult. If you can cast on and knit, you are ready to move on to double points. Class limited to
6. Materials are provided for class time but are available for purchase (it will probably be $5 or
$6, but haven't gotten my materials yet) if you want to take them home. One hour. 1:30pm.

Hands on. Bring a small needle-nose plyers with snips if you have one (not necessary to attend

11:00am.
Spinning, Weaving, and Dyeing
- Comparative History of Diamond Twill, Master Peregrine the Illuminator

get to know diamond twills. We'll talk about the useful characteristics of bird's-eye and broken,
2/1 and 2/2, as well as when, where, and why they were woven. There will also be a loom
warped and ready so people can try their hand at weaving bird's-eye diamond twill. One hour.
1:30pm.

hour. 1:30pm.
- How to Weave a Pouch in Three Hours on a Five-Cent Loom, Lady Sarah bas
Mordechai
- Weavers will start weaving in the pattern of their choice, and observe finishing a sample
pouch so they'll know what to do when they're finished. We will discuss weaving small pieces of
flat cloth on a cardboard loom. Depending on the size of your "loom" and the time you can
devote to this, it may take more than three hours to weave your pouch. Class limit 8. Materials
costs -- well, it's more than 5 cents because I have to buy pins and yarn and make the needles --
$2.50 per person (have you priced pins recently?). Pre-warped loom (yarn, cardboard and pins)
provided, super cool weaving needle provided, handout provided. Hand-out by David Swan,
writing as Henry MacQueen (Originally appeared in Wolftracks, Issue 1.1, October
1989). Class given by Sarah bas Mordechai (sarah at fiedlerfamily dot net) with permission from
the
author. One hour. 12:15pm.
